Damp Versus Wet Locations
Electrical listings divide outdoor spots into damp locations and wet locations, and the distinction is about direct exposure to water. A damp location is protected from direct rain but still subject to moisture and condensation, such as under a roofed porch, a covered patio ceiling, or the interior of a closed gazebo. A wet location is subject to saturation, whether from rain, splashing, or spray, which describes an open pergola with slatted top, an exposed post, or anywhere rain can reach the fixture directly.
