Outdoor cushions sit in the worst possible spot for fabric. Foam holds water, the cloth cover catches pollen and dust, and the whole thing cycles between soaking rain and afternoon sun. Mildew is the predictable outcome. Once you understand the three conditions mold needs, the problem becomes something you manage rather than fight blindly.
What mold actually needs
Mold does not appear out of nowhere. It needs moisture, a food source, and time. Of those, moisture is the only one you can reliably control. The EPA points out that mold spores are present in virtually all indoor and outdoor air, so keeping spores away is not realistic. The food is organic debris that lands on the fabric: pollen, tree sap, skin oils, sunscreen, and food crumbs pressed into the weave. You cannot stop pollen from falling, which means moisture and drying time are where you win or lose.
This is why a cushion that gets rained on and then dries within a few hours rarely grows mildew, while one that stays damp under a tarp for three days almost always does. The controlling variable is not whether the cushion gets wet. It is how long it stays wet.
Drying time is the whole game
A quick-dry foam core with an open, permeable cover can shed water and dry in an afternoon. A dense foam wrapped in a tight, coated shell can stay saturated internally for days even when the surface feels dry. If your cushions never seem to dry out, the fix is usually airflow: stand them on edge, prop them open, and get air moving on all sides rather than laying them flat where the underside stays wet against the seat.
Cleaning without wrecking the fabric
When mildew has already set in, resist the reflex to reach for chlorine bleach. Bleach can weaken many synthetic and blended fabrics, strip color, and degrade stitching and coatings, and on a porous cushion it rarely reaches the growth living deep in the foam. The EPA’s cleanup guidance emphasizes scrubbing moldy surfaces with water and detergent and then drying completely rather than relying on a disinfectant to do the work. For solution-dyed acrylic covers, a mild soap, a soft brush, a thorough rinse, and full drying in sun and airflow will handle most cases. Check the manufacturer’s care tag, because some covers are removable and machine washable while others are bonded to the foam. Whatever you use, the last step is always the same: dry it completely before it goes back into service or storage.
Preventing the next round
Recurrence is a moisture-management problem. A few habits do most of the work:
- Store cushions somewhere dry when a stretch of wet weather is coming, rather than leaving them out to soak and re-soak.
- If you cover furniture, choose covers that breathe or that have vents, so condensation does not collect and hold the cushions damp.
- Elevate cushions off the deck or ground so the underside is not sitting in a puddle.
- Brush off pollen and debris periodically, since removing the food source slows any growth that does start.
Sun helps too. Direct sunlight dries fabric fast and its ultraviolet light discourages surface growth, though it also fades dyes over time, so it is a tradeoff rather than a cure.
A note on health
Mildew is mostly a cosmetic and material-longevity problem on a patio cushion, but it is not nothing. Some people are sensitive to mold, and exposure can affect people with asthma or other respiratory conditions differently than it affects the general population.
