Tree Work 101: When to Trim, When to Remove, Who to Hire

Tree work is the one yard service where a bad hire can cost you a roof, a car, or a life. It is also the service most targeted by scammers after storms. Here is how to think clearly about it.

Trim, or remove?

Healthy trees usually need only periodic pruning: removing dead wood, crossing branches, and limbs threatening structures. Removal enters the conversation when you see:

• Large dead sections or major limbs dropping without storms
• Fungal shelves (conks) on the trunk or root flare, or soft, cavity-riddled wood
• A new lean, lifted soil, or exposed roots on one side after wind or saturation
• Trunk cracks that run deep, or included bark where two leaders squeeze together
• More than about a third of the canopy dead

None of these automatically means removal. It means you want a qualified assessment, ideally from an ISA Certified Arborist, before anyone with a chainsaw gives you a sales pitch.

Timing matters

Most pruning is best in late winter dormancy, when structure is visible and disease pressure is low. Oaks in oak wilt regions should only be pruned in dormancy. Spring bloomers like dogwood get shaped right after flowering. Dead or hazardous limbs come off whenever you find them.

What it costs

• Pruning a mature tree: $250 to $800 depending on size and access
• Small tree removal (under 30 ft): $300 to $800
• Medium (30 to 60 ft): $700 to $1,800
• Large (60 ft+), near structures, or crane work: $1,500 to $4,000+
• Stump grinding: $100 to $400 per stump
• Emergency storm work: expect a premium, often 50 to 100 percent

Hiring: the tree-specific checklist

• Insurance is non-negotiable. Tree work is high-risk; verify general liability AND workers comp with a certificate sent from the insurer. If an uninsured climber is hurt over your property, you can be the deep pocket.
• Ask if an ISA Certified Arborist is involved in the assessment, not just the sale. Certification is not a legal requirement in most states, but it is the industry's real credential.
• Refuse spike-climbing for pruning. Climbing spikes wound trees that are staying. Spikes are for removals only.
• Refuse topping. Any company selling "topping" a healthy tree is selling future hazard and slow decline.
• Get the disposal terms in writing. Hauling brush and wood is real cost; "removal" quotes sometimes leave a woodpile behind.

After a storm

Crews with out-of-state plates knocking doors, cash demands, and "we can start right now for a deposit" pitches follow every major storm. Legitimate emergency tree services are booked after storms and do not need to canvas. Call an established local company from the directory, take photos for insurance first, and never let anyone start work without a written price.
