Sunrooms and enclosed porches occupy an awkward middle ground. They feel like interior rooms, so people furnish them with living-room sofas, then watch the fabric fade and the frames swell within a season or two. Treating a sunroom as the hybrid environment it actually is, high light and unstable humidity, leads to better furniture choices and far less disappointment.

A hybrid environment

A glassed-in room concentrates the harsher parts of outdoors while removing the wind and rain that would otherwise disperse them. Sunlight pours in and heats the space well above the rest of the house on a clear afternoon, then the room cools quickly after sunset, especially if it is a three-season room without full climate control. The result is intense light exposure combined with wide daily temperature and humidity swings, a combination that ordinary indoor furniture is never designed to withstand.

What UV actually gets through the glass

People assume glass blocks the sun's damaging rays, and it only partly does. Ordinary window glass filters most UVB, the shorter wavelengths, but transmits a substantial fraction of UVA, the longer wavelengths that drive fabric fading and finish breakdown. Industry technical guidance on screening ultraviolet radiation explains that standard monolithic glass passes much of the UVA spectrum and that specialized laminated or coated glazing is required to block it more completely. So even behind closed windows, upholstery and wood finishes in a sunroom receive far more fade-driving radiation than they would deeper inside the house.

Why indoor upholstery fades fast

Most indoor fabrics are dyed and finished for interior light levels. Their colorants are not engineered for sustained UVA, so reds and blues wash out, dark fabrics turn patchy, and the fibers themselves weaken and thin along the sun-facing edges. Fading is uneven, too: the side of a cushion facing the glass bleaches while the shaded side keeps its color, leaving a two-tone piece within a season. Solution-dyed acrylics and other outdoor-rated fabrics resist this because the color is locked into the fiber rather than printed or surface-dyed, and the material is formulated for UV stability, so it holds its shade for years of direct exposure. In a sunroom, the fade resistance that outdoor fabric is built for is exactly the property you need, even though the room is technically indoors.

Humidity in an unconditioned room

The second stressor is moisture. A three-season room without dedicated heating and cooling tracks outdoor humidity, which means damp mornings, muggy afternoons, and condensation on cold glass. Sustained high humidity swells solid wood, loosens joinery, and invites mold on cushions and untreated frames. The EPA's guidance on mold, moisture, and your home recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below roughly 60 percent, and ideally in the 30 to 50 percent range, to discourage mold growth. Meeting that in a sunroom may require a dehumidifier, better ventilation, or accepting that porous materials will struggle there.

Choosing pieces that read indoors but perform outdoors

The design goal is furniture that looks like living-room seating yet tolerates sunroom conditions. Practical choices include:

  • Powder-coated aluminum or teak frames instead of untreated hardwood that swells with humidity.
  • Solution-dyed acrylic upholstery in deep-seat cushions styled like indoor sofas.
  • Quick-dry foam and mesh cushion cores that shed moisture rather than holding it.
  • Sealed or synthetic-wicker pieces that resist the daily humidity cycle.

Pair these with washable rugs and manage the room's humidity, and a sunroom stays comfortable and good-looking for years rather than becoming the place your old furniture goes to fade. If you do want the softer look of true indoor upholstery, reserve it for pieces you can rotate or cover, and position them away from the most direct glass exposure so the sun does the least damage.
