The distinctive smell of a freshly unwrapped sofa or bookcase is not a sign of cleanliness. It is a mixture of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, evaporating from the materials used to build and finish the piece. Understanding what these compounds are and where they come from makes it easier to shop sensibly and to manage a new room without alarm. What VOCs are and where they come from

Volatile organic compounds are carbon-based chemicals that evaporate at room temperature. In furniture they originate mainly from solvent-based finishes and lacquers, the adhesives that bond veneers and engineered panels, foam padding and its flame-retardant treatments, and some fabrics and their coatings. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that indoor concentrations of many VOCs are routinely higher than outdoor levels, and that new products and materials are a common source of that elevated indoor concentration. Formaldehyde is the VOC most associated with furniture because it is a byproduct of the urea-formaldehyde resins historically used in composite wood.

The formaldehyde rules that already limit emissions

Composite wood is now the most tightly regulated furniture component when it comes to off-gassing. Hardwood plywood, particleboard, and medium-density fiberboard sold in the United States must meet the formaldehyde emission ceilings set in 40 CFR Part 770, which caps how much the panels may release and requires third-party certification. A piece labeled TSCA Title VI compliant uses cores that meet those limits. That does not make the furniture emission-free, but it removes the highest-emitting boards from the market and gives you a verifiable baseline to shop against.

Why the smell fades

VOC emission is highest when a product is new and drops off over time as the most volatile compounds evaporate first. The rate follows a decay curve: strong in the first days and weeks, then progressively weaker over months. Heat and airflow accelerate the process because higher temperatures raise the vapor pressure of the compounds and moving air carries them away instead of letting them accumulate. This is why a piece that sat in a warm, ventilated warehouse smells less than one shipped sealed in plastic and opened the same day.

Ventilation: the lever you control

You cannot easily change what a finished piece of furniture is made of after you buy it, but you can change how quickly the emissions leave your home. Ventilation is the practical tool. Increasing the supply of outdoor air dilutes indoor VOC concentrations, which is why the EPA lists source control and increased ventilation among the primary ways to reduce exposure. Simple measures help: unwrap and air out new pieces in a garage or spare room for a few days if you can, open windows and run fans when you bring them into living space, and give upholstered items and finished wood time before a bedroom or nursery. Warmer rooms off-gas faster, so a short period of extra heat plus ventilation can shorten the smelly phase. Cross-ventilation, meaning air moving in one opening and out another, clears a room far faster than a single cracked window, and running an exhaust fan or the home's mechanical ventilation pulls emissions out rather than letting them settle into soft furnishings and recirculate.

Shopping to lower the starting point

If you want to minimize emissions from the outset, favor solid wood and water-based finishes over heavily lacquered engineered pieces, look for low-emission certifications on composite cores, and buy floor models or pieces that have already had time to breathe. None of this is a substitute for professional advice. VOC tolerance varies widely between individuals, and persistent headaches, respiratory irritation, or other reactions warrant evaluation by a qualified clinician rather than guesswork about a specific sofa.
