The instinct when lighting a path is to make it bright, but brightness is not what prevents falls. Uniformity is. A walkway lit by a few intense pools of light separated by darkness is more dangerous than one lit evenly and modestly, because the eye cannot adapt fast enough moving from bright to dark, and the dark gaps are exactly where the toe catches. Designing for even coverage, not peak output, is the core principle of a safe layout.
Uniformity Over Brightness
Think of the goal as a smooth carpet of light rather than a string of spotlights. Spacing fixtures so their pools of light overlap or nearly meet eliminates the dark stretches between them. When one fixture is far brighter than its neighbors, the contrast itself becomes a hazard, because your pupils constrict in the bright zone and then cannot see into the dim one beyond. Lower-output fixtures spaced closer together almost always outperform a few bright ones spaced far apart, both for safety and for looks. A useful way to plan spacing is to think about the beam each fixture casts on the ground and place the next fixture where that circle of light fades, so the pools knit together into a continuous ribbon. Corners, forks, and the tops and bottoms of slopes deserve a fixture of their own, because those are the decision points where a walker changes direction and most needs to read the ground clearly.
Illuminance Targets
There are recommended light levels for exterior walkways and steps, expressed in illuminance, the amount of light landing on a surface. General walkways need only a modest level, while steps and changes in level warrant more so the geometry reads clearly. Workplace lighting rules give a sense of the baseline: OSHA’s construction illumination standard, 29 CFR 1926.56, sets minimum illumination levels for walkways and work areas, illustrating that even utilitarian paths have a floor below which they are considered unsafe. For a home path the aim is not to match a workplace number but to provide enough even light to see the surface and its edges, with extra at every hazard.
Glare That Blinds
Poorly aimed path lights can hurt more than they help. A fixture that throws light into your eyes as you approach creates disability glare, where the bright source actually reduces your ability to see the darker path beyond it, the opposite of the intent. The fixes are shielding and aiming: use fixtures that cast light down onto the ground and hide the lamp from view, and aim any adjustable fixture so its beam lands on the path rather than at eye level. A good path light reveals the walkway while keeping its own source out of sight.
Marking Steps and Level Changes
Steps deserve special attention because a missed step causes the worst falls. The nosing, the front edge of each tread, should be clearly lit or visually marked so the eye reads exactly where each step begins and ends. Building means-of-egress principles treat stair illumination as a life-safety matter, and lighting each level change, grade transition, and stair edge distinctly, rather than washing the whole flight in flat light that hides the step lines, is what keeps feet from misjudging the geometry. Consistent, shadow-revealing light on the nosings is more valuable than sheer quantity.
Older Eyes Need More
Layouts should account for who is using the path, and vision changes with age in ways that raise the lighting requirement. Research on age-related changes in vision documents that older eyes admit less light to the retina, scatter more of it as glare, and take longer to recover when moving between bright and dark, all of which make uneven, glary lighting especially hazardous for older adults. Further work on vision, lighting, and fall risk connects better and more uniform lighting to reduced fall risk in this group. The design implications are consistent with everything above: provide more light where an older household needs it, keep it uniform to ease the slow adaptation, and kill glare that a scattering older eye turns into a veil. A path built for the most vulnerable user is safer for everyone.
