“Plastic lumber” is a marketing umbrella covering products that behave very differently, and treating them as one material leads to sagging decks and disappointment. Two families sit under the term, and their mechanics, especially how they deform over time, are genuinely different. Sorting them out is the key to specifying either one correctly.
Two different materials, not one
Unfilled high-density polyethylene lumber (HDPE) is essentially recycled plastic, often from milk jugs and packaging, extruded into boards. It is entirely polymer, sometimes with mineral filler and UV stabilizers. Wood-plastic composite (WPC) is a different animal: a blend of wood flour or fiber with a plastic binder, typically around half wood by weight. That wood content stiffens the material and changes its behavior. The two are not interchangeable, and a span or fastening detail suited to one can fail with the other. Read the product data sheet to know which you are actually holding.
Thermal movement, creep, and shorter spans
Both materials move more with temperature than wood does, so gapping and fastening details must accommodate expansion and contraction along the board. More important is creep: the slow, permanent deflection a plastic material undergoes under sustained load, which is why an unsupported plastic board that looks fine on installation day can sag months later. Pure HDPE lumber creeps far more than wood-filled composite, so it demands closer joist spacing and is often limited to non-structural uses. Research on the mechanical behavior, including creep and flexural performance, of recycled plastic and composite lumber documents why span tables for these products are shorter and more conservative than for dimensional wood. Do not assume a plastic board spans like the 2x lumber it visually resembles.
Standards and test methods
Because the materials vary so much between manufacturers, standardized testing is how you compare them meaningfully. ASTM publishes dedicated test methods for plastic lumber; the flexural properties standard ASTM D6109 for the flexural properties of unreinforced and reinforced plastic lumber is one of the core references, alongside methods for compressive properties and creep. Ask a manufacturer which ASTM methods their published stiffness and strength values were measured under. A load rating with no referenced test method is not a spec you can rely on for a structure.
Reading recycled-content and green claims
Environmental marketing is regulated, and the rules give you a lens for reading claims. In the United States the Federal Trade Commission’s Green Guides constrain how terms may be used: the guidance on recycled-content claims and how pre-consumer and post-consumer content must be qualified means a bare “made from recycled plastic” without a substantiated percentage is a weak claim. Likewise, the guidance on recyclable claims and when a product may be marketed as recyclable sets a real-world availability test. A responsible seller can tell you the post-consumer percentage and back it up.
End of life: recyclable in theory
Which leads to the honest caveat. A recyclable claim assumes facilities actually exist to accept the material, and for mixed plastic lumber and especially wood-plastic composite, that infrastructure is thin. WPC in particular is hard to recycle because the wood and plastic are bonded together. In practice most of these boards reach landfill at end of life despite the recyclable label. The genuine environmental case for recycled plastic lumber rests on diverting waste plastic into a long-lived product and on its decades of low-maintenance service, not on a second recycling that rarely happens.
Specified honestly, these products earn their place. Choose the material to the job: wood-filled composite where you want stiffness and a wood-like look on framed spans, unfilled HDPE where you need maximum moisture and rot resistance for a bench, dock, or planter and can accept closer support spacing. Follow the manufacturer’s span and gapping tables rather than treating the board like lumber, and buy from a maker who cites ASTM test methods and states a real post-consumer percentage. Do that, and recycled plastic lumber delivers what it genuinely does well, a durable, low-maintenance surface that keeps plastic out of the landfill for a long time.
